dog urine odor remover

We have all been there. Turn our backs for just one second and there it is, a smelly wet spot on the family room carpet! As much as we try to avoid this situation, these ‘accidents’ will most likely take place. Whether it be a new puppy to the household or a pet who has reached its senior years, a bathroom break may take place within your four walls of your home. With that comes, … odor!

Believe me, I know this from personal experience. As a dog owner throughout my entire adult hood, I have dealt with this issue more times than I wish to count. The smell of dog urine seemed to overtake my entire household regardless of what I used to diminish or eliminate the smell. Sound familiar? If so, stay with me as we dig into this a little bit deeper, providing you with some insight that will help in this situation. Furthermore, we will take a look at a number of some dog urine odor remover products to help in removing that unpleasant odor.

Introduction To Dog Urine Odor Challenges

As much as we try, eliminating or ‘masking’ this dog urine smell, is one difficult task. Without getting into the chemical breakdown of dog urine itself, just know that such things as ammonia, uric acid, bacteria and enzymes are the main culprits in creating this unpleasant smell. Furthermore, these accidents create a challenge for a number of reasons which I have listed below:

  • Visible Stains – This is especially true in carpets. Even after extensive cleaning, urine stains may be difficult to remove which will be problematic dog owners. Additional cleaning may do little to improve or remove these stains.
  • Persistent Odor – Just like with stains we mentioned above, repeated cleaning of the soiled area may only help to mask the dog urine odor. Unfortunately, this odor is likely to reappear, especially in confined areas.
  • Same Spot Reoccurrence – Our four-legged companions have quite the sense of smell, and despite thorough cleaning, tend to pee in the same spot repeatedly. Frustration to the fullest!
  • Expense Many of these dog urine odor remover products are not cheap, and can create quite a dent in your wallet. Furthermore, many of these products simply don’t deliver on what they promise. More on that a bit later.
  • Supervision – This will take some discipline on your part. Just the smallest of distractions can enable your pup to wander off and take a squat or raise a leg. Those dog owners with active lifestyles around the house (working from home for example) may find that supervision of their pet is no easy undertaking.

    Understanding Dog Urine Odor Removal

    dog urine odor remover

According to animals.com, ” Dog urine contains urea, creatine, uric acid, carbohydrates, enzymes, fatty acids, hormones, sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium and ammonia.” From this definition, you can see why removing dog urine stains and odor is such a monumental task. The key is applying a cleaner that can ‘break down’ these chemicals contained in the urine and doing so in a timely manner. My choice in doing so is selecting a product that is ‘enzymatic.’  This enzymatic process is one of using enzymes within these cleaning products that ‘break down’ the chemicals in dog urine to remove stain and odor.

What Is the Best Dog Urine Odor Remover? …  What To Consider

The best answer to this question depends on your own specific needs. Are you attempting to clean one specific spot or are there multiple mishaps throughout the house? Carpet or hard surface? Tiles, or wooden floor? There are a number of products on the market that are specifically designed to help in each one of these scenarios. In addition to this, you will find a number of other points to consider before choosing. Let’s take a look:

    dog peeing

    1. Type Of Dog Urine Odor Remover – Which one you choose should reflect your own specific needs in terms of the overall cleaning process.
    2. Reviews – Yes, that’s right. Take some time to research the various dog urine odor remover reviews to see what other dog owners are saying. This is always a great spot to learn honest opinions of these products.
    3. Safety Concerns – Be aware of those ingredients that are contained within your product of choice. This is especially true of the the type of chemicals you will find in some of dog urine odor remover products. Stay away from harsh chemicals that may be harmful to both you and your canine.
    4. Convenience In The Use Of –  Quick and thorough. This is my preference with the dog urine cleaning process, so choosing a product that allows me to accomplish this task in this manner is essential. These products are available in a spray bottle, or other ready to go styles.
    5. Cost – Before deciding on a specific product, consider what you can afford. With so many of these dog urine odor remover products on the market, finding one that meets your budget is quite doable. Word of advice here, and one that I had to learn from: A cheaper product may require additional applications whereas a more quality product requires less. As a result, paying for a cheaper product over and over again, will cost you more in the long run.

Step-By-Step Guide on Dog Urine Odor Removal

Let’s next take a look at the process involved in the dog urine odor removal. I’m sure dog owners will have their own routine as far as this process is concerned, but I wanted to give you a guide that is similar to the one that I have used over the years. It’s a simple guide to follow, but one that has done the job for me. Let’s take a look:

    dog urine

    1. The first step, and probably the most critical, is to act quickly! Doing so will go a long way in stopping the urine from reaching the back of the carpet or the padding which we touched on earlier. Use a paper towel to ‘blot’ up as much as the urine as possible.
    2. Next you want to apply the cleaning solution to the soiled area, making sure you apply a generous amount. In doing so, you should feel confident that the solution has made its way to the entire soiled area.
    3. You will next want to scrub the area with a firm brush, working the cleaning solution into the this soiled area. Allow yourself some time with this step, ensuring the solution has penetrated this area.
    4. Now its time to sit back and let the cleaning solution dry. How long? Read the label of the cleaning product you are using, and follow its recommendation for drying time.
    5. Once you have allotted the specified time in the drying process, your next step is to ‘clean’ and remove the cleaning solution. Using a clean towel(s) is a practice I have used, blotting the area to eliminate any excess moisture.
    6. Finally, examine the spoiled area, making sure both the stain and the odor from urine is gone. If not, repeat the process over until you get the results you desire.
