To assist you with some of this responsibility, we will take a look at a number of these ‘puppy must-haves,’ in a comprehensive list. Raising a number of puppies myself, these are the items that played a major role in helping keep my puppy healthy, safe and happy!

The wife and myself just recently brought a Corgi puppy (love at first sight) to our home, and have purchased many of the products you will find below. In my opinion, and experience, these are a list of the puppy must-haves that your little ball of fur will need.

Puppy Must-Haves: What Essential Items Do I Need  For A Puppy?

Nutritional Puppy Food

Nothing can be more essential to the short and long term health of your puppy than a wholesome, nutritional diet. Puppies grow so quickly, and providing them with a quality source of food will go a long way to ensure a healthy development. Hill’s Science Diet Puppy Formula is the choice we have chosen for our Corgi, a trusted and popular brand. The ingredients used to make up these recipes are top notch, providing our pup with a quality meal.

The Hill’s Science Diet Puppy recipes are also available for the large breed pups as well.

Puppy Dog & Water Bowls

Like other puppy accessories, there are a number of dog and water bowls on the market. Your new puppy checklist should include one of these products as well, and be based on the size of your pup and their eating habits. The puppy bowl that we decided on is the Frisco Silicone Stainless Steel Double Diner product for a number of reasons. It is budget friendly and easy to clean (dishwasher safe) being constructed with stainless steel and silicone. frisco puppy bowl

This would be choice for a pup early on as it allows for easy access to both the food and water. As our puppy grew we decided to transition to the elevated Frisco Diner for a number of reasons. It was definitely less messy as our pup was able to keep the kibble within the bowl making clean up a snap. The elevated design also reduced if not eliminated the stress of our pup’s neck when dining.

Puppy Bed

Puppies play hard and require a certain amount of ‘nap time’ during the course of the day. Providing them with a comfortable and safe place to do so is a puppy must have as well. These puppy beds are available in a wide variety of styles, colors and designs. This FurHaven Ultra Plush Oval Bolster bed pictured below provides these ‘walls’ that allows the pup to cuddle up while feeling a sense of security.

Puppy Playpen

A pen or playpen is also one of those must haves for new puppy. This puppy accessory will provide a secure as well as safe place for your pup to play. The playpen will also allow you time to take a much needed break, if only for a short period of time. Run the sweeper, do the dishes, finish the laundry … the puppy playpen has you covered! The IRIS 4-Panel Dog Playpen, shown below, has a number of positive reviews.

Potty Pads

Make sure you are equipped with these potty pads as it may take some time to get your pup housebroken. These are another one of the puppy essentials that will be needed from time to time. I prefer the quilted, rapid drying Four Paws Wee-Wee Superior Performance Dog Pee Pads that are pictured below.

Puppy Gate

There are going to be times when you may want to confine your puppy to a specific area in the house. The puppy gate is an accessory to do just this. It will give your little ball of fur more area to roam as compared to the puppy playpen, which we discussed earlier. I found that the Pawland Freestanding Foldable Wooden Dog Gate suited my needs as it collapses easily which allowed me to move it from one room to another. Freestanding, durable and secure.

Puppy Toys

These little guys love to chew, making it one of these must haves for new puppy. An assortment of puppy toys will go a long way in keeping them occupied, chewing on items that are meant to be played with. This Rocket & Rex Small & Medium Breeds Puppy Chew Toy Variety Pack is one that I would recommend. Priced reasonably with a nice assortment.

Puppy Crate

The puppy crate should be one on the new puppy checklist as well. The puppy crate allow you to place your new puppy in a confined area should you need some time to work on other things. In addition, these crates are useful when it comes to house and potty training. Puppies and canines in general, do not like to ‘soil’ where they sleep, holding it until they can relieve themselves properly outside. The MidWest iCrate Fold & Carry Single Door Collapsible Wire Puppy Crate is one that comes in a variety of sizes and is great for travel.

Puppy Collar

Most experts believe that puppy collars should not be placed until the seven to eight week period. It is important to get your puppy socialized as soon as possible, interacting with other individuals and pets. I prefer the Mimi Green Mermaid Glitter Personalized Puppy Collar which can be personalized with your pup’s name. This adds another layer of security, with a bit of style. Attaching a leash to the collar and taking a small walk in the backyard (potty training) is something to consider as well.

You should have a real sense of confidence, knowing that you have prepared for this new addition. No one will know your puppy better than you, so take the time to research and choose these puppy essentials wisely. In my opinion, and experience, the items we looked at above are ones that I would recommend. These puppy essentials will set you up for success.
