Don’t feed your dog this! Don’t feed your dog that! Your neighbor tells you that he feeds his dog a premium brand and that you should do the same. Okay, so what is the best premium dog food? Are you going to take your neighbor’s advice and run out and buy the same brand he uses?  Not so fast! I am here to give you some helpful information regarding this topic and examine the following topics:

  • Premium Dog Food (What Is It?)
  • The Marketing Aspect (Why You Need To Be Careful)
  • Premium Dog Food (How Do You Really Know)
  • Cost (Is It Worth It?)
  • Recommendations (Best Premium Dog Food)

Before I get into all of this, let me tell you a little story about myself in a search for the best premium dog food. I don’t know, four or five years ago, I watched my Afghan Hound become more and more unhappy with the food I was serving her which made me feel a little nervous. She no longer had that ‘look’ when it came to feeding time so, to be on the safe side, took her to my vet. After a few tests and examination my vet informed me that she was indeed healthy and stated that my hound may have grown ‘tired’ of this specific diet. He suggested that I look for a quality premium brand andstarted my research the next day. To say I learned a few things would be an understatement! I will share what I discovered here:

Best Premium Dog Food   (What Is It?)

Short answer to this question, depends on who you ask. You see, many, if not all dog food companies claim to be producing a recipe that is ‘premium’ in content. These claims are centered around the product ingredients, as only the best, wholesome ingredients are being used in the production process. As a result, the term ‘premium’ is used in describing their product. Let me give a quick example: Go to any pet store and randomly pick up a few bags of dog food and look at the ingredients label. Just look at the first ingredient or two on each bag. Let’s assume that one bag you picked out indicated that chicken was the first ingredient listed on the label. We’ll call this ‘Bag 1’. Now, let’s assume you pick out another bag, ‘Bag 2’ and the first ingredient listed on the label is chicken by-product. As a result, ‘Bag 1’ is more than likely going to be classified as  premium dog food. Now this is just a basic example of what can be considered as a premium food, but I hope you see the idea here.

Marketing Aspect …  I Bet You Didn’t Think About This!

Never underestimate the marketing and advertising side of the pet food industry. Just like the restaurant or the florist shop down the street, these companies are in business to make money and lots of it! Their advertising and marketing approaches are quite sophisticated and tested to entice you to buy. Let’s take a quick look at some facts associated with the dog food industry provided by the American Pet Products Association. (APPA)dog with questions

  • $23.05 Billion was spent on pet food  (2015)
  • In the USA alone, there are 312.1 Million domesticated pets living in 129.8 million households
  • The average total of $1,641 yearly is the total we spend on our dogs  (Includes food, vets, treats, toys, vitamins)

Pretty fascinating stuff, huh? Hopefully this will give you a better idea on why advertising a premium dog food as being the best, is so critical to the marketing aspect. They want your money!

Premium Dog Food  (Are You Sure?)

Let me give you another scenario. Suppose you are in the market for a new diamond ring. You go down to your local jewelers to pick out one and the clerk behind the glass case greets you with a hello. As you look down through the glass case you see two rings that look identical. One is priced a thousand dollars more than the other one. I bet your first reaction is that the more expensive ring must have more diamonds, better clarity, better made. Am I right? Looking at premium dog food is kind of the same thing. e assume that just because something is more expensive, it must be better! This is not always true. Unless you closely examine the food label, and understand the qualities of a premium food, you may be throwing good money away.

Cost (Is It worth It?)

cost Speaking of money, let’s take a look at the cost associated with a premium dog food. You will find that the cost will be more expensive (10 to 30%)  than that of a commercial dog food. Once again, without researching,  you may be paying more for a popular brand but not really receiving any additional benefits to you or your pooch. I don’t know about you, but I am more than willing to pay a little more for something (including dog food) if I know I will be receiving a better quality. So keep this mind when and if you are in the market for a premium dog food. You will pay more! Make sure you are receiving a quality product, and get your money’s worth.

My Recommendation  (Premium Diet)

I indeed feed my hound with what I consider to be a premium source of food and have been very happy with the results. No one knows your dog as well as you do, so make the choice that is best for you and your dog. Please consider the cost, availability, and most importantly read the label!
